The1891 Altgeld House Apartments are located in Chicago's top downtown neighborhood where our guests may enjoy every luxury. Most city sights are steps from our doors, and the subway, bus and free summer trolley will take you to everything else.

Description:
It's a pleasure to stroll around at any hour admiring the magnificent homes, visiting the interesting and upscale shops, lazing in the nearby parks or enjoying the myriad restaurants and music venues. Be sure to ask your host for suggestions on the many nearby attractions.

Built in 1891, The Altgeld House Apartments contains two complete self-contained vintage apartments, each recently updated to include all modern amenities, and then furnished with many 19th century European antiques and fine reproductions. “Elizabeth’s Place” can sleep up to five guests, and “Alice’s Annex” can house up to seven and "Kristina's Suite" sleeps two more. Either apartment invites the business or leisure traveler to feel right at home, and units can be combined for large groups. Please note that the building is strictly nonsmoking, although ashtrays may be provided on the verandah or deck.

Breakfast
The Altgeld House Apartments is not a bed and breakfast but there are always great coffees, herbal and black teas and hot chocolate in your pantry. Ask about having one of our chefs prepare a custom three-course breakfast for you -- one of Chicago's great bargains! And for bringing home your own fare, there is a 24-hour Dominick’s grocery just one block away, Whole Foods one mile away and many terrific breakfast spots within a few blocks.

So whether you choose to sleep late or rise early for a jog by the lake, you may dine at your convenience in either the formal dining room or the eat-in kitchen of “Elizabeth’s,” or the charming dining nook of “Alice’s,” but always on fine china with crystal glassware and fresh flowers.

Telephone
Both units have their own private lines and are each equipped with two telephones and an answering machine. The direct number for “Elizabeth’s Place” is 773.883.1020, and for “Alice’s Annex” it is 773.883.0945. Local calls (up to 15 miles) are included with your stay; long distance calls may be charged to your phone card or placed collect.

Fax Services, Photocopies, Internet Access
We can send faxes for you, and do black and white photocopies. If you wish to receive faxes during your stay, the number is 773.871.0412, but please let us know in advance. “Kinko’s 24-hour Copy Center” is about seven blocks away. Free high-speed Internet access is one block away.

Parking
A car is not necessary at The Altgeld House Apartments — so many attractions are just a few blocks away, and the subway to everywhere else is only one block from here.

However, if you do have your vehicle with you for short term visits, we can offer a daily street parking permit for one car per party, free of charge. Or one may use the secured garage just behind the apartments for $7/night or $150/month.

Verandah
Leisure time may be spent rocking on the covered verandah while surveying the birds and rabbits enjoying our yard, perhaps while sipping a late afternoon cup of tea.

Roof Deck
This spacious area above the garage has a large umbrella-shaded picnic table, as well as plenty of space for lounging in the sun. Feel free to bring your drinks or meals up here. In the summer evenings, there are decorative lights on the deck for a late night drink al fresco.

Catering and Cooking Lessons
If you are visiting “Elizabeth’s Place,” Joseph Sochor, a local chef and director of the Heat and Spice Cooking School, can arrange private dinners or exotic cooking classes for six to ten guests. Please contact us for menus and lesson plans, or contact Joe directly at www.heatandspice@rcn.com.

Pet Care
Much as we love animals, we regret that we cannot allow them in The Altgeld House Apartments out of respect for any future guests with allergies. So if you are in town with your furred companion, we suggest you drop them at Chicago Pet Sitting, a nearby dog and cat B&B. France will keep your pets in her own home, and gladly allow you to "check them out" for your daily walks or sightseeing excursions, and then drop them back at her loving home each night knowing that with the limited pets she allows, yours will receive tons of personal attention. The Neighborhood:

Groceries and Other Needs
Dominick’s 24-hour grocery, pharmacy and cafe are one block away, offering many ready-made foods for preparing an easy meal “at home.” Whole Foods, a full-sized healthfood grocery is just one mile south. We’re lucky to be two blocks or less from the post office, public library, free Internet access, a late hours pharmacy and several dry cleaners. And you can walk two blocks south or east or west to find a Starbucks!

Local Transportation
The Altgeld House Apartments is just one block from a main El / subway stop with 24-hour security for the Red Line (Ravenswood), Brown Line (Kimball), or Purple Line (Evanston) subways. (It’s a six-minute ride to downtown’s “Loop.”) For a more leisurely sightseeing trip, we are three doors from one bus line and one block from another, all with easy transfers. Enterprise Car Rental is four blocks north on Sheffield; they’ll even pick you up. The number is 1-800-325-9007. And in the summer months, a free trolley will take you around the neighborhood and over to the Lincoln Park Zoo, Botanical Garden, Chicago Historical Center, the beach and nearby museums.

Entertainment
It’s a two-block walk to Lincoln Avenue’s shops, cafes, restaurants, bars, music venues, movies (six screens) and live theaters. It’s one mile to Lincoln Park and its zoo, Lake Michigan’s beaches, the botanical gardens, several museums, and Wrigley Field.

Activities:
Chicago’s largest health club is four blocks away, as are several others, and The Altgeld House Apartments can offer its guests a free pass for a day’s workout. Indoor basketball courts are two blocks; an outdoor court, two playgrounds and a small community pool are a five-block walk. Jonquil Park is just behind us with its gardens, softball field, tennis courts, and playground. A nine-hole public golf course and driving range and the beach with its bike and roller-blade rentals are all about one mile.

Rates and Payment Policy:
Our rates vary depending on which apartment is selected, the time of year, length of stay and the number of guests in your party. Please call for a surprisingly affordable quote.

All visits include local phone calls and street parking for your car. Weekly and monthly discounts are also available.

Restrictions on Use:
The building is strictly non-smoking, although ashtrays may be provided on the verandah and deck.

Well-behaved children over age eight are always welcome, but we regret that we cannot accommodate pets.

As it is an older building, The Altgeld House Apartments are not wheelchair accessible, but there are only six steps to each apartment.
