Water Rock Garden Retreat was designed specifically to showcase the incredible natural beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains and to provide an example of mountain area permaculture. The retreat also showcases an ever expanding garden which provides both beauty and organic fruits, vegetables and herbs, seasonally, for the enjoyment of our guests.

Water Rock Garden Retreat is ideal for people who love solitude, unspoiled views, spectacular gardens, wildlife, starry nights and full moons, and the sound of rushing mountain streams in the distance. It is beautiful any time of year! Water Rock Garden Retreat is located on a 15 acre knoll just outside of Cherokee, North Carolina. At an elevation of 4500 feet, there are breathtaking 360 degree views with a 30-mile view of Tennessee and the great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Description/Amenities:
The property now encompasses a 200 acre tract with a 200-foot waterfall and hiking trails being established to Black Rock - an amazing destination at 5800' elevation with a 360' panorama as fine as any found within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The Retreat's ground floor is open and spacious with ten-foot ceilings and a fireplace. The house has four large bedrooms (three upstairs, one downstairs), including a large Master bedroom. The rooms are equipped with two queen sized beds, one full sized bed, 2 twin beds, one twin sized futon, and two twin sized bunkies. The house has two full baths, an antique claw foot and a wood-fired hot tub! We will provide one set of sheets and blankets for each bed as well as plenty of towels. The large custom kitchen is well equipped with utensils, dinnerware, pots, pans and an outdoor grill. The house also has a 500 sf, partially covered, cedar deck and an enclosed crow's nest atop for all-weather viewing of the incredible, panoramic view. A wood-fired hot tub awaits you to step in!

  • The phone is set up to make only local, credit card or collect calls (dial 1-800-COL-LECT). The phone number at the house is (828) 497-5210.

  • The Retreat is located 3.7 miles up a well maintained (but bumpy in spots) gravel road. The road is passable by almost any car except under snowy or icy conditions when a four wheel drive would be necessary. It takes approximately fifteen minutes to travel the road. Cars that ride extra low (such as some luxury or sport cars) may not be appropriate. Ask us if you are not sure about yours.

  • No hunting or shooting on, or near, the retreat, please. We encourage wildlife to stay in the area.

  • While we love our pets, some pets are inappropriate for Waterrock Garden. If you wish to bring a pet please inquire when making reservations.

    Useful Items To Bring:
  • Bug repellent, although the bugs are generally not a problem.
  • Warm clothing; the temperature generally runs about 10 degrees cooler than Asheville due to the high elevation. You can also check the current conditions at weather.com.
  • Extra towels for rafting excursions in Cherokee, for use at the creek, or in the yard. Towels provided are not to be removed from the house.
  • Cameras, binoculars and a telescope - if you have one!

    The Water Rock House is available for nightly and weekly rental year round. The nightly rate is $225 for parties of up to 6 with a 3 night minimum. Each additional guest is $10 per night, up to a maximum of 12 guests. Stay six nights, and get the seventh night free! Weekly rates start at $1350. Inquire about rates for extended stays at Water Rock.
